We are pleased to announce....

Our line of all natural mineral makeup and hair care products will be available for sale soon. Lipsticks and Eyeshadows in vibrant shades for the Holidays. Lipsticks, Glosses and Eyeshadows available before December 5th! Watch our site and the Yukon News for details!

Not all mineral makeup lines are the same - know what you are buying!
Mineral makeup is the a good cosmetic choice for people wanting to use only pure products on their skin. Mineral makeups' main components are naturally occurring or mined materials from the earth, such as titanium dioxide (a natural sunscreen), zinc oxide (a natural anti-inflammatory) and iron oxides. These minerals are finely ground and purified before going into the products you find in stores. The best mineral makeups are free of fragrances, preservatives and chemicals that conventional makeup contains.

There are no set regulations from Health Canada or the FDA on what constitutes a mineral makeup, which means that any product containing mineral powders as a main ingredient can be labelled as such. To find the purest product, look for ones that don’t contain chemicals such as bismuth oxychloride (a commonly found by-product of lead refining that’s thought to cause acne and micro tears in skin) and added colours, binders and preservatives.

Why you might like it…
It's an especially good choice for those with sensitive or reactive skin since it usually contains fewer additives. Mineral makeup is also waterproof and photo-stable (meaning it won’t degrade because of sun exposure), offers a smooth finish, absorbs excess oil, and is economical because a little goes a long way. Another benefit: Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties and can have a calming and soothing effect on skin, especially in mild to moderate cases of acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.

…and why you might not
Mineral makeup isn’t designed to conceal skin conditions or issues such as vitiligo, dark pigmentation, bruising or birthmarks. If you tend towards naturally dry skin - use a cream or oil base before applying foundation powders and blushers. Minerals tend to absorb excess oils which can leave your skin looking flaky or dry if applied alone. In the Yukon because of our long dry winters this can be especially problematic. Remember to drink lots of fluids and hydrate your skin with good quality oils, lotions and creams. Good makeup looks best on a great canvas!

** Our products contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (which are naturally occurring, mineral makeup offers some natural sun protection. That said, it doesn’t replace the need for a sunscreen or block when you’re going to be exposed to the sun.

Ice Fog - Hydrating Body and Bath Oil

You requested them & the first one is almost ready. Ice Fog - Hydrating Bath and Body Oil made with a blend of Olive/Grapeseed and Avocado Oils infused with a synergistic blend of essential oils especially formulated to warm/sooth and nourish winter skin.

What is a synergistic blend?
When certain essential oils are blended together, they work in synergy to enhance the effects each oil has on the body. When certain types of oils are blended together they create a stronger or different effect than when just one oil is used alone.
"It is not uncommon for the effect of two chemicals on an organism to be greater than the effect of each chemical individually, or the sum of the individual effects. The presence of one chemical enhances the effects of the second. This is called a synergistic effect or synergy, and the chemicals are sometimes described as showing synergism."

Why This Blend for Winter?
Our winter warming body and bath oil "Ice Fog" contains winter warming herbs and essential oils.  Chinese Meridians that are associated with winter are the Kidneys (yin) and the Urinary Bladder (yang). There are many ways essential oils can assist in the balancing these organs in the winter. One may experience cold extremities, a cold internal core, and lower joint soreness (Ice). In TCM theory a kidney deficiency may create blurred vision, poor memory, inability to think clearly, lack of decision-making capabilities and a sense of weakness in the spine (fog) Warming essential oils, massaged on the body or put in hot bath water (add mineral/sea salt for diuretic effect) can alleviate the inner chill and ache that for some accompany the winter season. Some of these oils include cinnamon, juniper, ginger, black pepper, peppermint, tea tree and rosemary. (Juniper is a great diuretic in its own right and works to reduce edema and stagnation of lymph). Our winter blend contains

Yukon sourced Juniper Berries infused in our oil mixed with a warming synergistic blend of essential oils. Great rubbed in to the skin or added to a bath by the cap full.

Moon Face Lotus Night Cream

Moon Face night cream is a super hydrating, gentle cream. Yukon winters can be especially hard on your skin. Infused with Egyptian Lotus oil this cream is the perfect solution to dry, chapped winter skin.

Jar: $25 (a little goes a long way)

Why Lotus Oil?
One of the more expensive aromatherapy oils for a reason. A little goes a long way. Lotus is considered a sacred flower in both Hinduism and Buddhism. It is said that one of the Buddha's sermons consisted entirely of presenting a lotus flower to the audience. Consequently, lotus essential oil is said to help promote tranquility, spiritual reflection and aid in meditation, or at least keeping your thoughts focused in the present moment, not upset about the past and worried about the future. Lotus  like frankincense is a scent that makes the body unconsciously take deeper breaths, promoting relaxation and calm (so great to use right before bed).

Jiva Perfumes

Our Jiva Perfumes are available as a solid perfume or as liquid roll on. All perfumes are scented with essential oils and are in an oil base. Our scents are subtle, not overpowering. * These scents are also available in soy & oil based massage candles

Toothpaste - Peppermint or Orange

Made with a base of coconut oil. This doesn't taste like traditional toothpaste (it's better:). We don't use sugar  or flouride in our toothpaste. * Please note coconut oil melts at body temperature - so keep it cool. No sunny windows or tucking it in a pant pocket for the day. Will stay solid at room temperature. Good for up to 3 months.

Price: $3.00 travel size OR $6.00 large (temporarily out of large - travel size still available)

Why would you want to avoid Flouride:
Have you ever read your toothpaste label? It probably reads something like this “WARNINGS: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek PROFESSIONAL HELP or contact a POISON CONTROL center immediately.” (taken from Crest Sodium Flouride Anticavity Toothpaste). If you look in to it a "brushing amount" is the size of a pea.

Fluoride is a pollutant - a by-product of copper, iron and aluminum manufacturing. The problem of how to legally dispose of fluoride was solved in the 1930’s when a study (funded by one of the country’s largest aluminum companies) concluded that fluoride prevented tooth decay. The FDA lists fluoride as an “unapproved new drug” and the EPA lists fluoride as a “contaminant”.  Fluoride has never received “FDA Approval” and is considered to be a toxic waste product from the fertilizer industry. In 1990 forty US dentist brought a case against the American Dental Association contending that the Association purposefully shielded the public from data that links fluoride to genetic defects, cancer and other health problems (Columbus Dispatch, Oct 21, 1990). Since 1990 over 45 US cities have rejected fluoridation. Ninety eight percent of Europe’s drinking water is now fluoride free.  A CANADIAN GOVERNMENT REPORT FOUND FLUORIDATION DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD.  SILICOFLUORIDES ARE LINKED WITH CHILDREN’S INCREASED LEAD ABSORPTION

The following are common ingredients found in toothpaste: hydrated silica, sorbitol, sodium saccharin, titanium dioxide, glycerin, sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, and sodium fluoride. Hydrated silica is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint and is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste.
  • SORBITOL & SODIUM SACCHARIN sweeteners and used as carriers and sweeteners in toothpaste.
  • TITANIUM DIOXIDE  a pigment used for providing brightness and whiteness to such products apaint, plastics, food, and cosmetics; used as a stain remover/whitener in toothpaste.
  • GLYCERIN a sweet, colorless liquid obtained from fats and oils and used as a solvent, antifreeze, plasticizer, and sweetener in the manufacture of dynamite, cosmetics, liquid soaps, inks, and lubricants.
  • SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) is a powerful surfactant (wetting agents) and detergent. It has industrial and cosmetic uses and is used around the world in clinically studies as a skin irritant. The molecule is small enough to penetrate the skin and can enter the blood stream being carried to every organ of the body. SLS is used in toothpaste as a foaming and cleansing agent.
  • SODIUM FLUORIDE is a colorless crystalline salt used in fluoridation of water, in treatment of tooth decay, and as an insecticide and disinfectant. Sodium fluoride is used in toothpaste to harden the enamel of the teeth to prevent tooth decay.

Although there are proponents that warn against the use of all of the above ingredients, sodium fluoride is the one ingredient that triggered the FDA to require warning labels on toothpaste.

HOW TO AVOID FLUORIDE
  • If you live in an area with fluoridated water, drink distilled water. (the Yukon does NOT have fluoride in its drinking water).
  • Eliminate Teflon  cookingware,  scratches in the surface will release PTFT, another toxic fluoride compound.
  • Avoid using toothpaste or mouthrinse containing fluoride. It is especially important for children to use fluoride free toothpaste since they are more likely to swallow some while brushing their teeth.
  • Avoid all non-organic grape products as they are especially high in fluoride content due to the number of fertilizer and pesticide applications. Wine can contain up to 3ppm fluoride.
  • Stop smoking, fluoride has been  found in cigarettes.
  • Be wary of tinned fish and canned food items. Fluoride may be used as a preservative.
  • Avoid long term use of medication that contains fluorine. Certain antidepressants and medications for osteoporosis contain fluorine.
  • Minimize consumption of mechanically-deboned chicken. Mechanically deboned chicken (e.g. “Chicken McNuggets”) has been found to contain elevated levels of fluoride due to the incorporation of ground bone particles (which are high in fluoride) into the meat.

Take advantage of it  and only buy locally grown and raised produce and meat that hasn’t been contaminated with Fluoride
THE YUKON’S WATER HAS NO FLOURIDE ADDED
Our Stuff:
  • Coconut Oil: Oil acts like a cleanser.  When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris. Coconut Oil will naturally whiten teeth and freshen breath. Coconut oil is being studied for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial health-protecting properties. Coconut oil also stops tooth decay.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate: Sodium Bicarbonate based toothpaste penetrates the crevices of teeth but is less abrasive than other kinds of toothpastes because the small crystals are pearl shaped not sharp. When a toothpaste is nonabrasive, it is gentler on tooth enamel. Other cleaning agents such as toothpastes containing silica are more abrasive and can wear down the teeth. It will also neutralize acids inside the mouth and helps to freshen breath and is known to help remove stains from teeth.
  • Myrrh: Myrrh is widely used in Germany to treat throat, mouth and gum inflammation. Myrrh’s antiseptic properties help treat gingivitis and loose teeth, as well as help get rid of bad breath or halitosis. Applied directly to teeth, myrrh can also help ease the pain of toothache.
  • Peppermint Oil: Mint oil is widely used in toothpaste because, the antiseptic properties of peppermint oil, fight bad breath and germs in the teeth and gums. Peppermint oil is also widely used to cure toothaches.
  • Orange Oil: Orange oil inhibits microbial growth and is an effective stain remover without being abrasive.
  • Clove Oil: Clove oil is antimicrobial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral. The most prominent use of clove oil is in dental care. The germicidal properties of the oil make it very effective for relieving dental pain, tooth ache, sore gums and mouth ulcers. Clove oil contains the compound eugenol, which has been used in dentistry for many years. The characteristic smell of clove oil helps in removing bad breath. Clove is also effective against cavities.
  • Stevia: Stevia is a herb which is commonly used as a natural sweetener. Individuals who cannot tolerate sugar or other sweeteners can use stevia. Stevia also inhibits the growth of some bacteria and infectious organisms, including those that cause tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Aloe Juice: Aloe vera juice is made from aloe vera gel. It is one of the aloe vera products that can be taken internally. It acts as an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agent.

Mr & Ms Pit

Mr Pit Spicy? or Ms Pit Botanic Bliss. Are all natural deodorants that have been road tested by friends and colleagues.
"Before trying this I was convinced I'd have to keep using the commercial stuff. I've tried the crystal and several organic/natural brands on the market and this is the first natural deodorant that has worked for me" It works for me and the people I've given it to to try  but, we are all different what works for me may not work for you. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

$12.00 each OR 2 for $20 (if you decide you like this product and want more - save your tube. I will refill it for you for $10)

Why wouldn't I want to use the commercial stuff?
Most commercial deodorant contains:
aluminum chlorohdrate or aluminum zirconium. You encounter aluminum everyday in cans and foil. As a pure metal it still isn’t good for you, but as a salt in antiperspirant it is better-able to participate in biochemical reactions. Aluminum acts as a neurotoxin and has been implicated in a number of health issues.

Concern about aluminum
Natural health groups have been pressing government and regulatory agencies for years to take a hard look at the long-term safety of aluminum in cosmetic products. Aluminum is what gives antiperspirants their wetness-fighting ability, and they’re highly effective. Commercial deodorants can contain up to 25 percent aluminum salts by weight.

You’ll notice most antiperspirants contain a warning to discontinue use if you experience irritation from its use, and quite a few people are sensitive to the aluminum salts, parabens and triclosan common in over-the-counter products. But what really worries some health experts is aluminum’s possible connection to breast cancer.

Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin’s surface. Some research suggests that aluminum-based compounds, which are applied frequently and left on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and cause estrogen-like effects. Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer (3).

Some research has focused on parabens, which are preservatives used in some deodorants and antiperspirants that have been shown to mimic the activity of estrogen in the body’s cells (4). Although parabens are used in many cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical products, according to the FDA, most major brands of deodorants and antiperspirants in the United States do not currently contain parabens. Consumers can look at the ingredient label to determine if a deodorant or antiperspirant contains parabens. Parabens are usually easy to identify by name, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or benzylparaben. The National Library of Medicine’s Household Products Database also has information about the ingredients used in most major brands of deodorants and antiperspirants.

The belief that parabens build up in breast tissue was supported by a 2004 study, which found parabens in 18 of 20 samples of tissue from human breast tumors (5). However, this study did not prove that parabens cause breast tumors (4). The authors of this study did not analyze healthy breast tissue or tissues from other areas of the body and did not demonstrate that parabens are found only in cancerous breast tissue

Other Ingredients in Commercial Deodorant
Penetration Enhancers
Ingredients such as propylene glycol and disodium EDTA help other ingredients travel deeper into the skin, making the antiperspirant more effective. While penetration enhancers tend not to be toxic, they increase your exposure to the other chemicals in the product.
Triclosan
is an antibactial agent that is absorbed through the skin into the body. While you might want your antiperspirant to be antibacterial because bacteria produce odor, you probably don’t want the negative health effects associated with Triclosan exposure, plus the antibacterial agent promotes the development of resistant strains of bacteria.
BHT
BHT is a preservative that has been associated with nervous system effects, among other health concerns. This chemical is not found in all antiperspirants, so it is easier to avoid than aluminum or penetration enhancers.
Fragrance
Most fragrances are potentially toxic synthetic chemicals. The biggest problem with fragrance is that the exact chemicals used to create the characteristic scent of a product are not disclosed so you don’t even know what the ingredients are. Fragrances may cause headaches and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Our Stuff:  We eliminate toxins by sweating. Our deodorant is not an anti-perspirant. Mr & Ms Pit are
formulated to combat odour and reduce sweat.

Coconut Butter:
Melts at body temperature. Coconut oil contains caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid & myristic acid which have natural antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Coconut Oil is a wonderful moisturizer for the skin.  (So keep it cool and dry - it will melt at hotter temps!)
 Sodium Bicarbonate:
Sodium bicarbonate is crystalline white fine powder. Because it is a base (regulates PH levels), its function in personal hygiene is to neutralize the acid produced by the sweat glands and serves as antibacterial which stops the bacteria causing bad odor. Unlike deodorants and antiperspirants, baking soda does not leave any stain on the clothes.
 Cornstarch
Made from the starch of corn. Reduces moisture by absorbing sweat.
 Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is a byproduct of making chocolate. It has a higher melting point than coconut butter so is used in Mr/Ms Pit as a stabaliser. Cocoa Butter is known to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Additional essential oils are used in Mr/Ms Pit for scent, to reduce odor.

Hip Chicks- Body Butter

Thick, rich, creamy. Just the ticket for moisturizing during our cold/dry northern winters. Made with Distilled Water, Yukon Rosehip seed oil, Virgin Kalamata Olive oil, organic Bees Wax and just a touch of essential oil for scent.

Why is Rosehip Seed Oil so good for you?
Rose hips are the seed pod left after the rose petals fall off. Rose hips are plentiful in the Yukon and a good source of vitamin C. The oil from rose hips (roa mosqueta), is full of nutrients and consists of 80 percent essential fatty acids which are involved in tissue regeneration and retinoic acid, responsible for skin rejuvenation and quickens the healing of skin damage. Studies have proven that rose hip seed oil is beneficial to the skin. In particular it is believed to reduce the appearance, of scars, stretch marks and acne scars. It is also believed to be good for dry eczema, skin burns (including sun), reduces wrinkles. It is also believed to be excellent for mature skin because of its high vitamin C content and super hydrating qualities.

Wild Mustard Bath

Love, love, love this stuff! A great way to sweat out a cold or fever.
A hot mustard bath is a traditional remedy for colds and poor circulation. It is believed that, by stimulating the skin, mustard oils draw blood to surface capillaries, relieving inflammation in the surrounding tissue. Used as standard medical practice until the first part of the 20th century it continues to be used in complementary and alternative medicine. The ancient Greeks & Romans, Europeans (Victorians used a mustard bath when ill regularly), Native Americans, and the Ayurvedic tradition of India have all used mustard in this way. * I have sensitive skin. I was concerned the first time I tried it that the mustard might burn or irritate my skin ~ I haven't had any issues."

Our Stuff: Wild Organic Mustard (from my parent's farm in Saskatchewan - thanks Dad :), Sodium Bicarbonate,  Epsom Salts, and a mix of good for you pure essential oils.
Directions: Add 1/4c to warm bath.  Soak for 15 minutes. will cause blood flow to increaseto the skins’ surface leaving your skin flushed and rosy. Don't use if pregnant or for children under the age of 6.

It's the Bomb - Vapor Balm

Have the sniffles? Muscles sore? Try this out - it's the Bomb. 100% Natural Oil base with no turpentine or petrolatum (petroleum jelly) like the commercial stuff.

Why would you want to avoid petrolatum?
  • Some believe petrolatum creates a barrier, locking in moisture—but it does not allow moisture to be absorbed from the atmosphere. For example, lip balms with petrolatum and other petrochemicals can be less moisturizing than those with emollients that enable moisture exchange.
  • Petrolatum comes from crude oil, and as such is not a renewable resource.
Our stuff: Purified Water, Beeswax, Yukon Juniper Berry Infused Olive Oil, Camphor, Essential Oils.
Price: $10.00 a jar
